The Coalition for National Referendum originally started as a research organization. It is now an advocacy organization.

The Coalition for National Referendum believes, as did James Madison, a signer of the United States Constitution and the 4th President of the United States, that the "supreme authority" is the people. It is the organization's belief that when the nation is faced with an unsolvable problem - an issue that divides the American people, then a National Vote - a National Referendum - should take place.

The Coalition for National Referendum also believes that with the decline in voting and the enormous impact that Political Action Committees make by contributing to candidates, there are times when a National Referendum on an issue would increase voter turnout and be the honest way to settle an issue.
